Has anyone had any problems painting clear urethane over Factory OEM
'YAMAHA "tank decals?
My new shop doesn't have a paint booth and I'm having an outside shop do my painting. My painter says the Urethane clear will eat up the tank stickers. If I was still doing my own painting, I would just shoot it without a thought. Has anyone had a problem?
Thanks for any input. I'm trying to wrap up an AT-2 restoration.

On all these old Yamahas that I've had, none of the original stickers were clear coated over.

It's surprising to me that "factory OEM" decals would still be good after all these years? And yes, originally they were not clearcoated.
In contrast, aftermarket decals often specify/require clearcoating.

I recently clear coated over the original decals on two of my 175s and my 400. right over the dings and scratches.

These aren't original 1972 stickers. These are new Yamaha parts from Partzilla. PN 99221-00140-00. I'm just worried that fuel might damage them if they are not cleared over.

Wow. That must be something new or I hadn't heard of them! Good price too!
For as cheap as they are, you could buy an extra set and if they goof up just replace and get clear coated?

Had a DT2 tank painted a year ago with aftermarket decals applied then cleared over. They've been holding up fine under the clear. The painter applied eight coats of clear over the decals to try and hide their edges. The bike's a rider and has about 750 street miles on since the paint job.
