Looking for options on adding a tach to my 1974 GTMXA.  The GTMX is the magneto only version of the GT1/GT80, with no electrical system.  Can anyone suggest any options for adding an electronic tachometer that won't break the bank?

Lots of digital tachs that run off a small internal battery.  Trail Tech makes some.  There are many other brands that are popular in go kart racing.  And there are a lot of cheap knockoffs on Amazon and Ebay.

Thanks Mark! I appreciate the info and the links.

I saw one battery powered tach on Amazon where a single wire wraps 5 times around the spark plug wire to sense the RPMs. Is this how most of them work?

Yes.  Inductive pickup so no hassle wiring into magneto or anything.
