What is this ? never seen one was created by Ht1kid

I have owned Yamaha’s since 1968 and worked at Butler Yamaha triumph for 5 yrs starting in 1970 I don’t ever remember seeing one so What is it?  Is on a 125 At2 I bet MarkT will know

I've seen similar on a 400 Husqvarna only at rear of cylinder... it was a custom modification to ease starting like Yamaha did on some of the 360/400's.

Looks like someone machined and installed compression release into side of cylinder.

Blimey that's getting desperate on a 125. Thought maybe a 175 top end & wanted to make it easier for the electric start on 125--but no. I know what--was to scare hell out of pedestrians on the footpath--we drive on the left here. Now i have a plan. Na that wouldn't work. Needs to be in the head to really scare them haha.

That’s what I thought but on a 125 here is a pic of the head. So 2 compression releases Strange

That looks just like the compression release I had on my CT-1 in the 70s, but I put it in the second spark plug hole. I still have that compression release. I actually loved using it on steep downhills on dirt. On the road, no use for it.

Yea Tom P I had one too on my 175 everybody had one but that bike had one on the head and one on the cylinder go figure?

I think MarkT got it right. The compression release on the top of the head was for braking, the one on the side was to make starting easier, perhaps to help electric start.
