"S" Forks ?? was created by Dirtboy

Hi everyone,

So I had these forks sat to the side from a parts haul sometime ago.

They were ugly, I had even thought the taper of the top of the inner fork tube was hand ground down the rust was so bad.

After a liberal degrease, and Evaporust bath, I noticed there were some notable differences in the inner fork workings compared to standard early DT forks.

And upon closer inspection, the fork outers are stamped with an S

  • I'm wondering if I have anything special here?
  • Are they an aftermarket Yamaha "Scrambler" type upgrade or offering?
  • Did they come standard on the DT1-S in 1969?
  • Or run of the mill fork from another model in the Yamaha line up?
Looking forward to the experts knowledge about what these are and how they came about

The 1971 DT1 Service Manual in the Tech Library here has bulletins in the back that go over some of the differences from year to year...  IIRC the "S" model did have different internal fork parts as shown in one of the bulletins..
