My first bike was the exact same white 1978 DT175MX

I'm not sure of the differences between '78 and '79 models, I think it was 1980 when it changed to box section swinging arm (UK versions).
I don't think the US ever got the mono shock model.
Anyway, I think this manual will help www.yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/service...nd-mx-service-manual

The black bike in your pic is a European spec 2K4 Dt175mx of 1979. In particular, that one is either German with a UK style rear lamp bracket, or a UK spec one with either a German spec front fender, or an aftermarket one.
The main difference between the 78 and 79 spec are the paint schemes, although there are a few very minor alterations that I don't recollect right now.
IIRC the 78 Europe model was available in blue , white and red only with blocky black panel graphics on the tank, while the 79 was available in red, blue, black and white with graphics like the tank on your black bike pic.
Edit. Just seen your attachment pic. That is a 78 model with a German spec front fender.
Before you part with any cash, check those front forks for straightness. They look a bit out to me, although it may be a camera lens artifact.

Pete, the US got the Mono shock DT175 in 1978 through 1981. they were available in Sunshine Red and in Balboa Blue that year. here is a pic of my Sunshine Red 1978 model.
we got them until 1981. We did not get the DT250 and DT400 in 1980 and 1979 respectively.

Was it the square section swinging arm version of the 175 that you didn't get?

Yes, we didn't get the square section swingarm unless you count the 1990's offroad only RT180
But you didn't get the leading axle forks we got starting in 1979.
