Gauge Glass Source. was created by Tinkicker

I have noted that people have been asking about plexiglass faces for their dials.

I had it in my head that I knew of a source, but held my council till I had the proof "in hand".  I had heard of this years ago and kept it in mind.

The source is the glass from a UK tax disc holder, just the right size for the dials of the 77 onwards DTs.  I don't know if the glass size is the same for other models though.  Very likely I would have thought.

This morning the tax disc holder for my resto arrived, so I thought I'd take a look at the fit.

Thanks for posting.

Quite amusing, though, that these are still being bought/sold, even though we don't have to display tax discs anymore!

I have glass available for 1968-1976 enduro instruments.

Gr8.  Yep.  To finish off my restos, I always fit a tax disc holder with reproduction period tax disc inside.  I have ordered one for August 1980 issued in Watford for the DT.

Thanks, my '78 has plastic, although I might order a couple to see if they will work. Can always use them on a future project.

I called it glass, but it is actually plastic.

Awesome, going to order. I'm also going to make a jig/cutter for my drill press and attempt to cut some just to see if I can. Am also carving a "buck" for an XT 250 right side cover. Going to try to vacuum form one. The more you know.........

If you can borrow an original and are looking for a creative outlet doing your own plastic mold might be worth looking into. I’ve personally wanted to try this process myself. Lots of how to vids out there.

Thanks Adguy. Yeah, I have watched many videos and talked to vacuum formers. Since I have a full operational wood shop I believe that I can carve the bucks fairly accurately. Also considered plastic 3-D printer and scanner, although most I have seen are too small for a larger side cover panel. All I can do is try.
