DT400 oil change was created by JimmyC

I changed the engine oil on my DT400. I put in the 1000cc and it reads over full. I run the bike and let it sit for a while and it reads correct on the dip stick. Wait a hour or so and check it, it's over full. What is the procedure to checking the oil on the bike? Thank you Jimmy

Just to clarify... it's the transmission oil that you changed... engine is lubricated by separate oil supply from oil tank that feeds the Autolube pump or oil mixed into gas... you probably knew this already but wanted to make sure because I have seen engines seized from running without oil because the owner didn't realize that the transmission oil didn't lubricate the engine.

The Tech Library has many manuals and the answer is in one for your bike...

Also, make sure there aren't any parts like a spring and plunger in your drain pan... that model has two plugs in the bottom. One is the drain plug and the other holds the shift drum detent plunger and spring. Very easy to lose the shift detent parts if the wrong (or both) plugs are removed.

(And again, you probably knew this... just want to make sure as it's fairly common to lose those parts.)

Yes, transmission oil. I only took out the center plug. I see where it says in your post to let the engine warm up. That's what I was looking to know. If I run the engine then check it it reads perfect. If I check it cold (overnight) it's about a inch high on the stick. Thank You JimmyC

Here's a thread that may help you with your question about oil level according to dip stick marks.

I believe the key is to run the bike for a few minutes, hold the bike level, do not screw dip stick in and the reading will be accurate.

I just did a similar thing here, I drained my oil out a couple of days ago and upon filling today 500ml put it over the marks on the dipstick.

Not sure where to go from here, I assume the drain plug is the guy with the 17mm head and not the detent one??

Run engine for a minute or two, turn engine off. Hold bike level and check dipstick without screwing in to case.

Thanks for the tip JimmyC, I put 500ml in and ran it and after a couple of minutes it showed 1/2 way up the dipstick. I put another 500ml in ran it again and it showed just above the full mark.........I can live with that B)

MarkT in post #2 posted the instructions from the manual. That's what helped me.
