when I put it into a gas can it was good. and appears to be good when it is running through the clear inline filter filling up the bowl.
Will try a new spark plug today.

So installed a new spark plug from the store and all is now good again. Now Just to let you know I did have a new plug that i put in and it made no difference. I did have the plug for about 15 years or better but did not think that that would be a problem. And I did try several older plugs that should have still been decent. So I threw away ALL of my old plugs and now have new ones.
here it is running what do you guys think? Sounds ok? seems a little rich still to me.

I think was a good diagnosis by RT325 w/nothing more than a video.

I think he did too.  Thank you RT325.   I sure am glad it was an easy fix but still don't understand what was going on with my other plugs.

First thought is how was the gap on the old plug compared to new.
Did you gap the new plug. Anyway, if it's running ok now then that's good.
I tend to get carried away, when the answer might be simple.
Resistor plug caps can have issues in old age too.

I didn't check the gap when I put it in but I did after you asked the question and it was gapped properly. So I don't know.
Here is a video of it running now,  the sound is a little muffled but you can hear it and to me it sounds a little rich.

Just a couple more ideas to put out there:-

1) Is the air filter over oiled?

2) Could the exhaust be all gummed up? I had a similar era DT125 that was so bad we had to saw the exhaust in half to clear it, then weld it back together again! It ran great after that!

You say gapped properly but bit more detail in thou. 22 is about max in my books for old points mags. In this new video it could be fractional rich on the needle but if it is slightly rich can you go through it clean in the next higher gear with a bit more throttle to go through that area. Could lift the clip a notch but gotta be wary of going too lean when after being at speed & you then back off the throttle. I think you have a bit of scope to play there though. Just my opinion.
