New 1978 DT250E project questions was created by rybo7961

Just picked up a new DT250 project. Tank is blue and plastics are silver. From everything I’ve seen these were only in silver for 78. Anyone have info on that? Also, tank is in rough shape and was considering getting one of those tanks in eBay from India and wondering if anyone here has used one before.

Just ordered a new Vape ignition set since my stator plate was wrecked.

Thanks.

PM me and I will give you my cell # so I can send you pics. the back mount holes are 4 1/4 " on center. It is blue needs fuel cap and petcock. I metal rescued the tank and flash rust removed a while back, but still might need a flush in case of some flash rusting has occurred. Has been sealed up since cleaning. Going to use endoscope to check out the condition inside.

It looks like the blue ones on eBay from India, which no one can afford.

Best way to tell the year is with the VIN and the VIN charts here in the Tech Library.  It probably is a 78 with a 77 tank but I've also seen where someone found plastics from a newer or older model and the tank is the original color.

If your tank is sound, a far better investment would be to have it painted silver or have your plastics painted blue.

Cap and petcock should still be available new from Yamaha.  Check before you buy from ebay or someplace as some sellers just sell new Yamaha parts on ebay labeled as "NOS" at a premium price because many people don't think to check with Yamaha for the parts.

Did confirm its a 78 based on VIN. The tank is pretty rough inside and has a decent dent in the side. Got excited when I found those reproduction tanks on eBay but didnt realize the prices dont include tariffs/customs. May have to try out the POR-15 kit or evaporust and a repaint. Good to know about the tank hardware. Thanks.

I have used Metal Rescue for rust removal with good results. I got a gallon from home Depot for $28 a few years ago.
