I'm not for one moment doubting his capability but, if it is a model that had no regulator fitted as standard, he might not know that Yamaha recommended retro fitting of these. I have attached a link to the Yamaha Service Bulletin on this subject.

Was it the rectifier or regulator that was changed?

I am told my bike is a 1978but possibly only registered then.

would my bike have a VIN as all i have is matching frame and engine number

VIN is just another name for the frame number.

Matching is good - it means the engine hasn't been replaced.

No promises, but if you post here the first 6 characters of the frame/engine number, then we'll try and give a steer on which model you have.

Your numbers probably start with an asterisk, then 3 characters, then a dash, then 6 or 7 more characters, then another asterisk. What we need is the 3 characters each side of the dash.

I meant to ask, is your voltage spike causing bulbs to blow? If yes, what happens if you fit a 12v headlight bulb?

Does your bike have a magneto set up, or generator/alternator?

hi, the only number i can find on both frame/engine is 102271

just got a 12v to try.

There will be other characters in front of these, followed by a dash - might need a rub clean!

Here is a random example from fleabay - look at photo number 13 to see what I mean.

found the plate 1Y8 102271

it has a stator plate and new regulator on headlight.
12v bulb blowing.
its peaking around 100v on revving - conclusion wiring oxidised.

OK.

Can't be absolutely certain, but probably a 1977 model.
