CT3 carnage and questions was created by mike8162

Hi All,
I am working on a CT3 and finally getting around to the engine. I knew there had been a few issues with the clutch. After removing the covers and clutch basket I noticed a problem. I think something was bouncing around in there at some point. I managed to find a replacement clutch assembly in very nice shape. The PO claimed that he bought it with a couple 125s. I'm guessing that there might be a few parts from a 125 in there. Here is the back of the old clutch basket.

Today I removed the kicker and idle gear and noticed what might be a bigger problem. The drive axle needle bearing is hanging out about 2mm. Does this bearing press in from the outside? I thought it pressed in from the inside and there was a shoulder to stop it. If that is the case I think I need a different case half. The stop that is cast into the case for the kicker is wore to the point of being a ramp, could this have caused the problem? I have looked into getting another case half and they seem to be out there. Partzilla says that all ATs frrom '69-'76 and CTs from '69-'73 use the same right hand case half (444-15121-01). A while back there was a post on the drive axle bearing. There are two listed and mine is the 23mm bearing. Was this used on later AT/CT models or just CTs?

My kick gear and idle gear are in pretty poor shape as well, not sure if they are original. Partzilla lists 2 idle gears and 2 kick gears. This appears to be 261-15651-00 but there is also another one listed with a 401 prefix. The kick gears are 261-15641-00 and another one with a 315 prefix. I will replace both of the but I am wondering if they are supposed to be paired together. 261 kick gear with 261 idle gear? Sorry for the long post, I'm sure I will have more, was hoping to not have to split the case. First time for that so I will have questions. Thanks in advance!!

Your case looks normal if I remember correctly.  AT and CT got the bearing upgrade.

On the bearing pushed out...  my best guess is the sprocket nut has been removed on the other side?  Then maybe something hit the shaft?

That's the only way I can think of for that bearing to move out.

Can you determine if there is any play on the TRAN’S shaft? The bearing looks spun to me which is an issue I just encountered with my CT3. I bought a new bearing but it was loose in the case. Then discovered a larger O.D. bearing was available. It fit like a glove.

I split the cases today and I think adguy may be correct. Looks like something bad happened with the drive axle bearing. It is a 23mm bearing so I am guessing that it is correct but something pushed it out and mangled the bearing surface in the case. I am guessing that this bearing is pressed in from the outside and rests against a shoulder on the inside which is not there any more on mine. Probably being starved of oil in this position as well. Drive axle is pretty rough as well where it rides on the bearing. Picture doesn't really show how rough it is. I also noticed that the main axle bearing does not fit tight. This has a plate over it but shouldn't that have to be pressed or sweated in? Looks like someone used a punch to tighten it up but I can slide it out by hand. Looks like I will be replacing the RH case half, bearings, seals and drive axle.

This is exactly what I found when I opened up my 73 CT3 last yr. I started looking for a case and ended up finding a complete running origional bore motor. So I bought it to get this project pieced together and running but I still wanna rebuild the eng that matches the frame, so looking for a rh case.
