Hello everyone, i have a 1983 yamaha xt250, i took the side cover of to paint it and also put new handlebars on. I also removed the shiftet lever to clean it up and the cover. When i put it back together i cannot shift through my gears like i could before. I can get it into 1st but barely. Im wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if it could be a damaged shifting fork or possibly some small snap ring or something or maybe the clutch is done. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

My guess is maybe the shift shaft got pushed in when the lever was put back on and/or somehow the shift sector gears got disconnected or out of sync.

I second what MarkT says. Note how the return spring is sitting in the pic but if its only come out a little way then gone back in on one tooth away from central where the arrow is then spring should still be sitting right. Should be able to fix it without clutch off as can see under or behind the clutch enough by memory, bit of a fiddle.

Nailed it!! I finally had time to mess with the bike today and it is how shifting, you were right the spring was not lined up with the shift fork. It now shifts but without using the clutch hand lever, i think this may just be a cable issue that I'm going to look at. Thank you very much!
