Question YAMAHA XT250T '83 KICKSTARTER "ISSUE"

Hello guys, I welcome myself to this amazing forum.

I have a 1983 Yamaha XT250T that I'm in the process of restoring. As seen on the video ( don't mind the Greek ) the kickstart clanks back from time to time, it doesn't happen all the time, and I'm not quite sure if it's only when the bike is warm or not because I only rode it 3-4 times. A guy I know who is a motorcycle mechanic said that it might be the decompression system that needs tuning. Any ideas what it might be before I tare the engine down?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome from NZ. Looks like might be an "84 at least to be a twin cam model. But anyway--i think the answer must be to do with the engaging ratchet piece not fully clearing the other part. Does the ratchet rattle on the teeth if you move the kick lever ever a little bit?. I can't see the valve lifter being involved & if i slow the video down to .25 speed nothing moves on the valve lifter arm at the lower end. Only other unlikely thing is being high up is it lacking oil under gear No2 & its picking up on the shaft momentarily & trying to turn the lever shaft as that gear looks like it spins all the time when running. Motor got plenty of oil?, lay it over on its side before starting just for a try. Always something new comes along with bikes & this is another one i've not seen before. Cheers. whoops forgot link..

& another thought. Is there excessive end float on the kick shaft. Can you push pull it more than running clearance & with the motor running what difference does 'that' make, what can you feel. That's leaving the kick lever right up against the stop & just push shaft in then pull shaft out.

Hello friend,

Thanks for the reply, once I have the motor in the frame, I will check all these stuff you mentioned. I think it's either one or the other , because the oil inside might be from 2010 but I digress, I was not ridden all the time. Again thank you.

Looks like I found the bad guy.

Two teeth from the kickaster gear where broken off for who knows how many years.

I also found the bronze bushing tha goes in the bottom of the kickstart shaft inside the crankcase

I'm extremely lucky that it didn't grenade the engine.

Check for wear on the case. I have a similar issue with the bearing on the idle gear in a CT3. Broken bearing must have spun first and wore the aluminum case. I had the perfect fix with a thin strip of metal to hold the new bearing in place. I drove it in with the bearing and it looked to be super tight.  Unfortunately, the clutch and idle gear are gnashing too tightly so I will need to buy a new case for the clutch side.
