Brake shoes - just in case......... was created by Gr8uncleal

........anyone thought we were exaggerating how these can deteriorate over the years, see attached photos of the rear set on my 1975 RD200 - de-laminating at both ends!

I can not post a picture or I’d share mine showing when I took the front brake hub out of the front wheel hub.. one pad fell out… that would’ve made for a painful adventure if it locked up whilst riding.

The first delamination "warnings" I saw were many years ago on the previous Yamaha Forum.

A member there had a front shoe friction pad come loose and lock the front wheel throwing the rider over the bars without warning... if I remember correctly he flew head first into a steel guardrail resulting in a severe head injury (he was wearing a helmet)...

So the advice to change old shoes is a genuine safety warning not to be taken lightly.

I ALWAYS replace the shoes on bikes I work on that I am going to sell or keep.
I have taken a bunch of them apart that the lining has just fallen off of the backer.
The Hodaka I just did was full of powder that the linings had turned into.
