Carb probs, 1980 ts185 was created by bo.burrell

Hey guys!! I finally got my 1980 ts185 running, it will idol but when I give it any throttle it dies, then I can’t get it started again for a while. It seems to only have one adjustment screw on the carb(one with a spring) which I think is the idol screw, no other adjustment screw. It has back fired a few times, I’m stumped, any suggestions? Thanks guys

That's not a lot to work with , but here goes...
Try. ( 1 thing at a time )
new spark plug
Replace or bypass plug cap.
Loosen or remove exhaust
Remove air cleaner
Clean carby and set float level. There will be a mixture adjustment screw there somewhere.

Sounds like it's flooding.

Have you cleaned and checked the carb? I don't think there is a mixture screw on that carb, just idol/throttle valve adj.

Had an XT350 do exactly the same thing. Called the local Yamaha dealer (the one that doesn't think to order jets for me and then refuses when I ask. The one who no longer stocks Yamahalube 2S, quarts or gallons.) and asked about that, and the mechanic said, "Your pilot jet's clogged." Ordered a bunch of the usual suspect parts from Partzilla, and when I opened it up, I found it was as I suspected: the main jets were crudded over. Pilot was fine.
I'd think yours is too, if it idles well. Check your needle jet and your main jets yet?

I'm not used to a carb without an idle mixture adjustment but remove the pilot 13 & & main 11 & give them a clean plus look through them for an obstruction--maybe look first so you know if you're removing something. Pilot will be super small & hard to line up to look through. Also check the joke jet/drilling which will be down a cavity in the bowl with an extension that fits down there. Choke fixed jet down bottom of cavity is small & easily blocked as is the pilot jet. If ya really keen you could remove the long bit the main jet screws into called emulsion tube or needle jet as crud gets up around there--maybe leave that this time as can be a bit stubborn to remove. Could go larger size in the pilot but shouldn't be necessary. Also check the electrical things mentioned by "Wheel mad". EPA in the US required carb mixture screws to be "tamper proof" starting in about 1979.

DT175 carbs of that era had the idle mixture screw capped off. Cap/plug can be removed to adjust the screw. I suspect Suzuki did the same?

My first effort would be to remove and thoroughly clean the carb and then clean it again. If you post pictures of the carb someone here might be able to identify a capped mixture screw.

Here's a picture of a late TS carb body from ebay. Pop out that plug with the little hole in the center and you'll have access to the idle mixture adjustment screw.

And again, it sounds like your carb needs a good cleaning. :Buds
