also dumb question - I was considering buying a bearing set from all-balls for both the front and rear wheels as well (no reason why I just like to run a fresh set if im taking the wheels off)
and I saw they have a set of tapered roller bearings for the steering stem - which is weird because I recall these bikes having ball bearings fit into a race.
do those tapered bearings just rest on top of the race or do you need to take the race out to run them?

You need to completely remove all 4 original races.
Even then, often the new height is taller... not much of an issue on some bikes, an issue on others.

Mark,
Many thanks for the heads up.
Didnt know if it would be an upgrade for the bike - since I plan on running this bike basically daily for a short commute to and from the bike shop I'd really like it to have some upgrades.
I think I'll just buy some new ball bearings of appropriate size with some fresh grease

Still waiting on paint and powdercoat
In the spirit of the holidays - I thought I would buy myself a gift:
A vape electronic ignition kit! I think while its costly its more then worth it to avoid messing with aftermarket coils/windings and points.
Putting fresh sprockets on the bike today - will post results.

You can buy quality ball bearings from bicycle shops... 1/4" lower and 3/16" upper. Look at parts list for quantity... should be 19 and 22 if I remember correctly. Good hardware stores have them too. Last time bike shop just gave them to me or you can buy small bags of good ball bearings cheap on Amazon or online stores.. nice to have extras.

Hey all -
trying to upload some photos of the work done to the bike and the pictures are once again not uploading.
the site spits the following error despite being correct file size/type
Could Not Move File Into /Homepages/37/D93795775/Htdocs/Yamaha/Media/Kunena/Attachments/8297/1f6c7d9513901420257e7a20751cd6a4.
Thoughts?

Ahh! here we go!
So: went ahead with some more work while painting and powdercoating is going on
Fresh all ball bearings and seals front and rear
Fresh sprockets and chain front and rear
Gave the rims a light brushing with some cleaner and some steel wool and they cleaned up nice!
waiting for one of the senior technicians here at the shop who has experience installing these electronic ignitions to help me out - seems like it would be something easy to get messed up if not done correctly.
On the way: Some 320mm rear shocks with 12mm bushings - seems to be roughly accurate to what is on there currently - they are adjustable too so thats a plus.

Aren't the bushings supposed to be 10mm? That's what I have in my notebook on shock bolt sizes.
Question authority, think for yourself!

Hmm - I'm not sure - If I am being honest I saw a set of replicas - and they said 12mm bushings were the correct size (at least as far as I know)
I'll go to check out the bike when the shop opens on tuesday and see if they fit - otherwise I might see if I can get some correct size bushings made/ordered.
