First Post- 1971 JT1 new seat foam and cover installation

Hello. my name is Robert, and I'm new to this site. I own a 1971 Yamaha jt1, and recently bought a new seat cover and foam from KDI reproductions to replace the old, rotten seat. Does anyone have tips on installation of the seat? At first, i was going to silicon the old rubber banding back on, but i just saw that KDI sells new stuff for 8 bucks so planning on getting that instead. Is there a video on youtube or something of someone doing this? The foam seems pretty tall so I don't know how im going to stretch the seat cover on there and in the metal tabs. this ran me about a buck and a half, so I don't want to mess it up. planning on taking out to the farm in 2 weeks, want to be ready! Thanks in advance for the help!

Dave at KDI was super cool and gave me some good advice that i will pass on, knowing that my seat was for a DT1E
- don't put any kind of glue on foam
- use super glue to attach the rubber channel thingy that goes over the edge of the seat pan. I bought Gorrila Super Glue Gel and it was super all right, worked great on rubber and my fingers
- from there i just made sure to center the "YAMAHA" in back and the seams in front and then clamped stuff duwn.  I also then used suerglue under the inbetween pan clamp spaces to glue seat cover down using my set of Chinese Harbor Freight platic crap clamps.  this worked really well, i pitt the fool who has to recover this seat in 2075!

I had to trim a half inch off the top of my KDI foam in order to get enough material to tuck into the retaining clips. I marked a line a half inch down along the side for the full perimeter. Then I marked a line straight down the center.

Then I borrowed my wife's electric carving knife...... I held the knife handle to the outside and the knife tip was aligned with the center line. I trimmed the right half and did the opposite for the left half. I basically cut two opposing wedges off the top.

That leaves you with a high peak running down the centerline. So I laid the blade horizontal and trimmed off most of the peak, leaving only a slight beveled edge along each side. I was sweating bullets as I cut the foam, but it worked out fine in the end. I neglected to take a photo of the trimmed foam. So all I have are the trimmed pieces and the end result.

Seat covers typically appear to be too small or short for the foam, or the foam looks too tall.   The foam needs to be compressed a bit, usually, and the seat covers (I've fitted many) need to be sorta stretched over the foam.

It helps a lot to cover the foam with a layer of saran wrap (see below). This allows the seat to slip on.
Also, it is critical to warm up the seat cover in the sun or in the clothes dryer (carefully!!) so it will stretch some.
Keep it warm with a hair dryer as you work it on.

Here is my DT3 seat I did recently.   It was a wreck, with some areas of foam rotted away.

 

I had to cut out some areas with a knife and replace them, gluing them in.

Addendum:
Heating the seat cover in the clothes dryer:   Turn it inside out, and put it in a pillow case.  Check it frequently as you heat it up on Low.

Thanks for the replies- you clamped the seat to a table to compress the foam? I'm a bit confused

you all seem to agree about having the vinyl warm, i'm still iffy on cutting the foam though- MSavitt - I'll try your method i think but I need a bit more clarification

I don't clamp the seat down.   I simply press down on the foam with my hand while stretching a section of the cover.  Or on the seat while it is upside down on a table.   Take your time, it takes a while to accomplish this process. It might help to watch some of the many youtube videos on the subject.

 mine has ample, perhaps too much slack, but tured out good
I like the cut down the middle, could be helpful safety featre to help pass gas without having to lift a leg off a peg

Trust me Dude, the JT cover wasn't gonna make it to the clips without trimming the foam. I tried various methods of compressing and warming the foam and cover. I even had my son helping me and he has arms bigger than my legs.

My trimming method was learned from another JT owner who heard it from another JT owner. Maybe I should've called Dave for input, but it turned great and I am totally satisfied. The kit is top quality compared to the two cheap covers I tried prior to the KDI kit.
