68 DT1 ignition timing was created by tvrc18

Brand new Futaba points and when I get the timing at 3.2 or 3.1 BTDC the gap is way wide, like 18 thousands. Maybe if I set the timing to 3 the gap would be in spec. I see no spec for plus or minus on timing spec. Not sure if I should leave the big gap or retard the timing.

Do you have the head off the bike to use the dial indicator parallel to cylinder bore?  Or are you going in at an angle through the plug hole?

All I can think of then is the points then. Futaba is aftermarket. What's wrong with the originals?  You might try them and see where the gap ends up?

And you are 3.1 BTDC and not ATDC?   (I do that a lot)

I think I threw the originals away, they were pretty ratty. I tried another Futaba set I had and pretty much the same thing. I am going to look for originals.

you can get them from Yamaha but they are expensive at around 50 dollars.

if I were desparate I would buy them there. are you sure you are before top dead center? turn the flywheel backwards which is clockwise to get your timing. the flywheel turns counter clockwise when the engine runs.

Futaba is a Japanese brand and they make high quality electrical parts.
