Meter Gear, How to Remove, DT1E #1
What is the trick to removing the speedo meter gear from the front backing plate of a 71 DT1E? I don’t see anything holding it in there except 50 years of crud. Any secrets?
Thanks.

Clean all the junk out good. It takes a tool like a socket with two tits on the bottom which will lock into small grooves on the top of the fitting down in the speedo hole. If you look on Ebay for something like Yamaha speedo gear removal tool you should see one. I made mine out of a deep socket and carefully removing material on the end and leaving two tits across from each other. When you get a tool be sure to push down pretty hard before you turn so as not to round off the grooves in the speedo fitting.

The main gear driven by the bent ear plate can be reluctant to come off too & any squeezing only makes it tighter. If all else fails flick the big seal out & heat it up a carefully a bit & it should move.

Like pedalcrazy I fashioned my own from a 12mm socket. After I cleaned out the area really well, I smeared grease around the edge of the socket, and pushed it down the hole until it bottomed. Then carefully pulled it back out, and marked where the holes in the piece were. Then I ground down the areas on the socket edge to leave just the tabs.

My piece came out pretty easily, but a reluctant one could possibly benefit from some light heating to loosen it up.
