I'm putting a 78 DT 400 engine in to a go kart. I could use some help on the wiring. Does anyone have a basic wiring diagram. Obviously don't need turn signals or lights or anything like that, just need the thing to run. Also do I need any electrical components besides the cdi, harness, and the coil?

Are you sure of the year of your motor? Check the serial number to our vin tables.

The CDI box you have looks correct for the 77-78. Wiring should be the same for both.

Cdi Box, coil and the stock ignition should be most of what you need.

The white plug you have in your hand contains the neutral light wire (light blue), headlight circuit power (yellow), and battery charge to rectifier wire (green/white). None of those are required to make the engine run.

There is an individual black, brown, and white/red that go to the CDI box wires of the same color. (The Black also goes to chassis ground).

That leaves 3 wires on the CDI box... One black is not used.

The Orange goes to ignition coil. The Black/White is the kill button wire. If you ground the black/white it kills the spark.

I marked the wires on your picture.
The black wire with the X is the one not used.

S are the wires that go to stator (engine) The colors wire match 3 individual wires from stator.

C is wire to coil

K is wire to kill button. (grounding it kills engine)

These are the wires out of stator you use for ignition system.

Odd issue. The motor runs fine and revs great when in neutral, and with the clutch in/in gear; however, when i let the clutch past a certain point the engine shuts off no matter how high the rpms or how slow the clutch is released. I can get it to move forward normally until I get to the dreaded kill point. Any ideas?
*EDIT* Issue is while at load not only clutch related. super low throttle is fine anything above that it wants to bog like hell

Problem solved. For anyone wondering it was a combination of a somewhat sketchy coil and a n air leak in the carburetor right where the fuel fitting is. The kart absolutely rips with the stock cdi functioning flawlessly through the revs. It's pretty frightening. I'v e only explored up to 2nd gear, and I already ordered a second disc break kit until i'm willing to test the beast out again haha It's a blast
