Wondering why the are there?

Seems all other parts on our vintage Yamaha's have a purpose for being there, and i guess the rubber rings do to.

I'm only asking because i don't know, so if you have an opinion as to why they are there then reply away :)

Make them look bigger & meaner--scare the Suzukis, or did they have them too, can't remember. Suppose to give protection in a fall. Good question though!!.

Good answer RT325 and that was my thinking after i posted this question...California safety rules?

But then again, did they have compulsory hi-vis and work health and safety departments gone mad on the late 60's?

I have a couple guesses. I like your thinking outside the box trying to understand why certain parts are needed.

Keep sun glare off the gauge face so you can safely monitor your speed. That chrome really shines in the sun!

Keep moisture/dust out. Kinda acts as a shield.

It covers up the crimped edge so I'm sure it is partly for looks and to help seal up the crimp

All good points so far . . . .
Yamaha calls these rubber rings "Dampers" . . . need I say more?
Ever try to look into a mirror that's buzzing along in rhythm to the engine rpm's . . .
occasionally, I've also seen gauges buzz and bounce the needle around, to where you can't even get a good reading.

Thanks for all your input guys!

These were a little expensive, though shiny! and I thought maybe I could do away with the dampers to save a bit ...turns out the bike needs them for very good reasons and I've ordered a set :)

If Enduronut says it, it's true.

Great question though on the thread.

They are there to create wind resistance, bikes are way to fast without them. Thought everyone knew that, ........gosh.
