How to set the timing on my ‘73 Yamaha CT3 175? #2
Tool bar across the top of the home page, tech library has service manuals that will detail how to set timing.
Also, search "timing 175," and you should find many threads with pictures that have discussed this previously.

Doing the same thing you are. I did a conversion on the millimeter spec of 2.0 mm BTDC and got a number of 0.0787 inches because my gauge is in inches. Would it be correct to just round that up to 0.079 and go with that spec for setting the timing?

I would stay on spec. It say precisely 2.0mm B.T.D.C., so that’s what I’m doing, hopefully we will be on the dirt in a few. Thanks

By memory it's 1.8mm or 72 thou + or - a bit. Depending how technical you want to get & what your aim is & me being a rough bugger-0-if you set points at a tight 15 max it'll be in the ball park providing the points fiber heal isn't worn out & mucking up that theory. That's assuming the flywheel key is good not damaged to locate flywheel. There should be a little timing tab off the lighting coil to align with a notch in the flywheel window & providing no-one has bent it all over the show then you could go by that for the points breaking moment which should be 1.8mm btdc. That's my ideas for a sunday morning half asleep lol. My AT1 kick start similar mag as your CT3 still has original points from 1970. Started it up yesterday after sitting for a long time & throttle was glued shut with out terrible fuel residue. Hate stale fuel smell. Didn't want to take carb of so screwed the idle speed right in & broke the bond to free it. Poor old girl. Has a 175 top end nowdays--TY175 top end.

1.8 or .071 BTC not 2.0 or .079.

So I guess the manual is wrong? Mine says 2.0 mm. BTDC.

Welcome to the funnest part of this hobby, relying on the manual only to find out it’s wrong! This won’t be the last time. That’s why this site is so valuable.

It's better to remain silent and be considered a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
