I was able to clean things up enough to read the VIN sticker and the frame stamping. The last 2 numbers on the frame stamp need more work to read correctly but it is differently an 81, engine made in 76, according to the sticker and the engine number stamping. The frame sticker says the frame was built in 2-81. I was able to find wiring digram for a 1980 125, I am hoping they didn't change much.
Having a CDI system does it need a battery to start?
Does the ignition switch only go off or on? The key is kinda stiff but it moves, the air box and carb boots are pliably, air filter is no more but the frame for the filter is ok. I have the muffler end of the exhaust someplace in storage, I have seen it in the last year, so that will be fun to find, lots of boxes.
One last question was 81 the last year for the DT125 ?
Thanks for all the advice and info, I will post in the post '77 page with further questions, then maybe the restorations page when the real work starts.
Thanks, Jeff

The engine was likely not made in 76.... (not sure how you deduced that?)
Does not need a battery to start.
Key is only on/off.
Air filter still available from Yamaha
1981 is the last year of the DT125 in the USA.

My mistake I miss read a part of the vin sticker, and with the last two numbers on the engine a 76 I was confused.
Still need to get spark once more then the work starts.
