My brother has a beautiful IT 490 1983 he just purchased. But it’s a hard starting sucker. It runs great once it’s started. What are the magic tricks to starting this beast ?

Get it against compression [not just after it] & then kick from the very top & follow through. Its a big beasty. I'll put a link to my similar bike if i can find or work out how, [now sold] but had a few over the years. Mine was being a bitch as had been parked for a year or two so took a bit to settle down & get over the shock of being woken up from hibernation. Yours should start from cold in a two or three kick [start on the third one] but for the choke to work the throttle needs to be fully closed. Of course then there's the "has it ha too much choke", in which case then close choke & use full throttle. For a hot start i'd just kick it with the throttle open, no choke. Bit hard to advise without being there as so many variables like motor condition & carb settings & are the crank seals dry from sitting unused for an extended time.
Links here. Got the damn thing going in the end & gave it a damn good thrashing lol. Was a while ago. paddocks full of pumpkins now, 20 acres of them. Can't wait until they're harvested so i can destroy the paddock for a bit lol. I know what'll happen, [crash caused by random pumpkin left behind.

Funny looking back. First find a tractor to lean on, then make sure the pedal rubber [if fitted] isn't going to slip off & take the side out of your leg. Then off home after that for a 'nana nap' & lie down.

Because it's such a big bore, when you start your kick through you have to start at the very top of the kickstart stroke, and make it kick past the second compression stroke. If you don't, your kick through stops on that second compression before TDC, and that = no start.

So, it takes commitment to drive the kickstarter through the 2nd compression. You need to wear a boot. If you're 5'10" or shorter you may need to stand with your left foot on a box or something sturdy so you can get your weight behind your right leg. I used to be 5"11" and now seem to be around 5'10" and need some height assistance to start an IT490 I had a year or so ago, and my YZ400.

I totally agree with what’s above - my 1983 IT490 needs to have compression right at the top of the kick start stroke.
Then it takes a pretty good stab to spin the motor.

Welcome!

I got this! BEST way to get an IT490 started is to have someone else do it! :ROFLOL

Seriously, great advice given... If not already mentioned, cleaning the carb thoroughly and making sure plug gap is correct (probably 0.024" or less.) can make a big difference. Also hold throttle closed when kicking over.

Actually, a video of your brother starting his just for us to see & hear what's going on incase there is something unusual to hear when it first fires up like very lean or choke not working [only sucking extra air making a bad situation worse] things like that.

RT325's video should have come with the bike from Yamaha. Perfect example of starting procedure. :likey

A common thing many people do without even knowing it is twisting the throttle open as they kick. This inhibits the starting circuit which works best throttle CLOSED.

The big bore Husqvarna (390 I think.. might have been a 360) my friend bought new in about 1977-79.. one of the first years with a factory Mikuni... was an absolute bear to start cold. Almost impossible. We went over to Malcolm Smith's shop one morning and one of the factory mechanics was there. He watched the other shop guys screw around and exhaust themselves kicking and when they stopped for a second to catch their breath and to discuss what they were going to do next, he quietly set the air screw back to stock turns out and backed off the idle speed stop screw like a quarter turn. Started first kick! Would not idle cold like this and barely idled when warm... but started super easy after that.

Make sure you have the float level set correctly. Too low a float will make the enrichment lever less effective.
