Hey guys. My name is Razz. I'm in my early 50s, from Montana. I've never owned a bike before and hardly ever rode one. I've been fighting a host of chronic autoimmune diseases and just started working again for the first time in 15 years. One thing I've learned is if you keep saying "Someday ..." suddenly you're 50 years old and "someday" hasn't come ....

I don't just want to learn to ride, I want to KNOW something about bikes ... so I went looking for a cheap beater I could learn on and work on ... found a "1985 Yamaha DT100" for sale for $300. (First picture). Ended up buying it for $60. (Here's the original ad: www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/252007...ref=messenger_banner )

Well, some of you already said "WTF? They didn't make DT100s in 1985." ... some more of you looked at the pictures and realized what I've since found out .... it's a '78 DT175E.

So I figure it's a good deal, and .. well .. it's only sixty bucks.

I plan to do a full restore (or as much as I can, anyway) and then get some seat time while I learn to ride, and then (maybe) flip it and buy a street bike (got a deal lined up for a Virago).

I'll probably have lots of questions along the way, and I'll start a Resto thread to post updates as I go. Should be fun (and might be a bit of cussin' too, LOL)

Welcome. You got a great deal ! 60 bucks is a whooping good deal !!!!!
The 78's are transitional bike and have some of the best of both worlds of old and new.
Meaning : Yamaha wanted to upgrade to something, I guess.
You have most of the bones there and a great start to making this happen for you. NICE DEAL !!!
I will be 60 at the end of this month, so keep on keeping on there, youngster. ( most of us have something going on . )
Myself...I am currently rebuilding a 78' DT125's front forks .( same thing as yours. )
I just came inside to say goodnight to my gal. ( California time. )

Now, Don't get discouraged... You have A kick BUTT bike there !!! You will enjoy the heck outta it.
Lets get er going !!!
Lot of members here will see to that.

Glad you could join up here !

Welcome from the other side of the "pond".

Loads of info here for you, both in the Tech Library and in individual threads.

If it was me, I think that I'd get the bike going, make sure things like the tyres, brakes etc were up to scratch and then put a few miles on it. Then, if you still wanted to, start the cosmetic refurbishment.

Good luck and have fun whichever way you decide to go.

Looks like you have our attention as to your next move.
Post pictures cause we like pictures. and yes, change out those brakes. You don't wanna go over the bars when they DE-laminate on your first ride.
Get a helmet too.
