Another newbie IT 175 question. was created by 69DT-1250

So I have another question or 2 for those that know bikes and working on them. Is the number stamped on the right side engine case 650cc, is that the amount of oil that goes in the crankcase? And if that is overfilled would the oil burn and make a bunch of smoke? I just brought home a 78 175 this weekend. It fires up and smokes really bad and smells like burning engine oil like when a four stroke has bad rings. I drained the transmission to see the color of the oil and measured it in my ratio cup. It drained out right around 1400cc of oil.

That's not "crankcase oil"...  it's transmission and clutch oil.  Crankcase is lubricated by the oil mixed into the fuel.

You could have a bad crankshaft seal or other issue that allows trans oil into crankcase.

And yes, that's too much oil.

I don't know if this link will work...  yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/ownders-man...t175e-service-manual

For anything about the engine not covered in this manual and/or as a supplement, use the 78 DT175 manual in the service manual section.

Also, did the oil you drain smell like gasoline at all?  If so, that's a sure sign of a bad seal or other leak between crankcase and transmission.

I checked the oil out. It’s fairly clean and just smells like oil. No gasoline. Thank you for the heads up on the manual! I was searching around earlier and found specs for different model of bikes. This is a great place for information! I’m thinking about just changing out the crank seals and see what happens. I need to get into the clutch and see what’s going on. Really stiff pulling the lever in.
