DEET installed a new one and points. Running for almost 2 years.
Could it have gone bad already??

Darn electric parts !!

That bike has an unusual condenser that's "upside down" from the normal ones... you have to pull the stator off and flip it over to see where the wires are attached to the condenser... and if I remember correctly, new condenser has wires attached... you don't solder to the condenser like on the older bikes.

Not sure what parts DEET used... if Yamaha OEM it would be unusual. OEM is like a ridiculous $30+ but still available. Ebay has OEM Yamaha in Yamaha package for half price sometimes.

If aftermarket part was used, it wouldn't surprise me that it failed... not that DEET didn't use what should be good parts... I've just seen newer condensers fail a lot more than it seems they used to.

Might just be me getting old though... you know the "back when I was a kid a condenser would cost 10 cents and last 100 years" thing.

After Dave, Scott and myself chasing the timing all over the place, Checking voltage and ohms , using a dial indicator and ( Mark's ) light setup and then a meter.Doing the carb multiple times for a month.
Had a dream the other night. That the needle jet needle wasn't hooked up to the floats proper.


Did that at 3:14am.
So off comes the carb. The needle doesn't attach to the floats. Probably a good thing I had that dream... the base of the needle jet wasn't even finger tight ! Back together it got better revs but timing was still all wrong.

Checked out the bikes folder for the receipts for the points and Condenser type . Points were OEM... Condenser was a cheapo after market jobby.
Purchased for 5 bucks. ( Niche cycle part )
We won't go that route again.
OEM Condenser on the way here now.

Newly manufactured quality points and condensers are getting hard to find... anywhere... best is NOS and luckily Yamaha still seems to have some of them new.

You Sir are correct ! You try to cheap out and save a little... come back to bite you.

YEP.. the condenser.
Bike runs great now. Better than it should or what we tried to get it to run.

Glad you got it resolved! It’s threads like this that make me read everything here. I file the info away for later. It’s the best place to learn. I think we should have a thread for what parts should be OEM sourced if at all possible. Hope you have some good riding.

Well, did a drag race in my hood against a 70' CT1 for a short burp. 4th gear for me on that CT,
The greenie kicked butt..
Hungry Valley run with T-Bone run showed it is a strong bike and we may have done something correctly to get it to scream now.
Bike is, " Tits " ...Can I say that ???? ( MODS ?? )



Thanks to all of your input and help for this project.
Runs perfect now and will be riding not just in my neighborhood.

Maybe more later on down the road on this project.
