Yamaha Blaster Engine in DT175 Monoshock? #1
Hey everyone!

Several people have told me that the Yamaha Blaster (YFS200) engine will bolt straight into the 1977+ DT175 bikes. However, I've haven't been able to find any details or confirmation on the web.

Does anyone have any experience with this engine swap? What modifications, if any, are required?

Thanks so much!

I like 'that' idea but you'll have a few things to overcome for sure. First thing looking at a pic of a motor is that the swingarm bolts through the back of the motor--which is a good thing, but not sure if you can achieve that with your frame. Things also like is the blaster a central exhaust port or angled like some motors. If angled then it'll run into the front frame tubes. Fins might be so big they need trimming to clear the front down tubes. lots of stuff. But Hey--i sure like the idea of doing that. Lets know if it happens.

Yup, I had some of the same concerns, particularly the exhaust port angle, engine mounts, and the big fins. But I've had several people try to tell me this was a straight bolt-in swap, no mods required -- I wonder where they're getting the idea?

Kosmo recently was asking if anyone knew who did this blaster conversion on a DT175 monoshock. I have not seen any threads posted of that engine swapped into a DT175 mono shock.

DOSE did a blaster swap into an AT2. Thread shown below.

Ohhh, @kosmo was actually asking about that one for me! I was trying to track down the builder to ask some questions.

I'm about to tuck into the AT2 / Blaster thread from @dose -- thank you!!

Same basic engine family, for reference I have run a '79 DT 175 motor in a '79 YZ 125, and a '78 IT 175, they all have the same motor mount bolt pattern, the difference is the cylinder dont swap from IT to DT or DT to YZ, there was someone doing the blaster swap on EB's old forum, never saw how it turn d out, was hoping they were a member here , I believe that the RT 180 also shares same motor mount bolt pattern

IIRC the IT175 had the chain and sprockets on the right side.

The comments on this Youtube video have some pretty good info:

Bike is a DT MX monoshock. Says the builder:

"All i had to do was to attach a new engine mount at the bottom near the swing arm point before i sprayed the frame. The sprockets lined up perfectly. The cylinder fouled the main down tube slightly so i just removed a small amount of the finning at the front."

The 78-81 DT125/DT175 engine is heavily based on the 76-79 YZ125 and the 77-79 IT175.

In 1980, the YZ125 and IT175 was redesigned with the chain on the right side.

As far as I can tell, the DT175 kept the same basic design past 1981... the RT180 we got in the US in the 1990's was a street legal "DT" in other countries and still used many of the 80-81 DT175 parts!

Bore and stroke was different on the RT180... longer stroke, smaller bore... but some internal parts still interchange with the 78-81 DT175. And yes, I believe the engine mounts are the same.

Blaster engine is in that same family. I almost bought a cheap Blaster a few years ago because I'm pretty sure it would be a fairly straightforward swap... I'd buy just a Blaster engine but you can often buy a whole running Blaster cheaper locally than just an engine on ebay!

If you try it, let us know how it works out! :likey
