Hello to all
Some time ago I've bought a DT 250 ('78 or '79?) and I'm trying to restor. I'm now at wiring phase. I was also lucky to buy complete engine where FWM wiring is not matching with a diagram. Colors a re completely different than on wiring diagram and different than in old engine. To not burn anything I need your help guys. Do somebody may take a look on attached sketch and give me some advice?
Ah, almost forgot, my main wiring seems to be like DT400...

If It's "79 it'll have CDI Ignition. If it's magneto that i thought finished in "78 it'll have a Black only coming from the mag to run the ignition, or maybe black/white further up. I can't remember now but think cdi has either a black with red tracer only for the source, or could be a brown only. Trigger [pulse] coil will be white with a red tracer. Sorry if this has been covered. Wrote it earlier & forgot to push send.

What part of the world are you located in and what are the engine numbers?

Hi Gr8uncleal
I'm from Poland. I have two engines as you may see in my previous posts. According to them:
1. New engine: *1R7-200359*
2. Old engine: *1R7-001925*

I hope it will help and maybe some support be possible.
thank you in advance and regards
jacek

Thanks.

1R7 is model code for DT250MX Europe, 1977 and 1978.

Not that it's relevant, but was the bike imported from Germany at some point?

The colour of the wires on the old engine is close to that of the US 1978 DT250E, for which there is a wiring diagram in the Tech Library - I have attached it here for convenience.

I'm not sure about the wiring on the new engine!

Are you able to post photos of the new and old stator plate/generator and also of the wiring connectors on the main harness of the bike.

Finally, and I should have asked this before, what is the frame/VIN number of the bike?

The problem for me is Yamaha tended to be extremely consistent on wire colors.

Your "new" wiring colors do not appear to follow the normal Yamaha colors at all. It might be from a different bike completely. The ignition systems were made by suppliers like Mitsubishi, Hitachi, and Kokusan and it is sometimes possible to fit a complete Kawasaki or Suzuki or even Honda ignition stator and flywheel to a Yamaha. This is somewhat likely as the newer engine probably originally had a CDI system and is now points. Not uncommon as the CDI's fail and parts can be expensive or even impossible to find.

Can't you simply install your original ignition system onto whichever engine you are using?
