Hi all, My new to me 73 DT3 appeared to have a little leakage at the pipe/flange along the bottom so I ordered the replacement gaskets. The main gasket is a crush type but the outer gasket , part # 248-14623-10 (part 15 in the diagram) they sent is a section of string gasket material that apparently is wrapped inside the flange or around the outside of the header where it enters the flange? In the parts photo it appears to be a single piece. Is this the way it works? Thanks for any advice on the matter. Tim

Hi Tim, it comes in a length of about 300mm or 12" I cut off enough for 1 turn, popped this into the groove and then fitted the exhaust....all seems good.

Yep, just wind it around & poke it down in the circular slot as you go then pipe will seal into it when the springs pull it up in there. Can't say mine ever sealed properly but in theory it should.

Mauser and RT325, thanks so much for the help. I wasn't expecting the gasket to look that way and I haven't removed the pipe yet so I was really confused. I have been viewing a lot of the threads trying to re-learn about the DT's (I had a 69 and a 71 both 250's) but that was a long time ago. This is a GREAT forum. I see that you two are among the regulars who help people out...thanks again. Tim

I've used the high temp silicone instead of string and it seemed to work fine. Until i started the DT3 up the other day and had leaky exhaust. When i took off the pipe it appeared that the high temp silicone had deteriorated and was nowhere to be seen.
One question on using the stock string - what is the consensus on how much string to put in? Info i've seen varies from one turn to use the whole length that comes in the package.

AwL, When i did mine i tried to wind it all in there but it was so tight that I couldn't get the pipe in all the way, even after slightly tapping it in place a little. The springs just wouldn't reach. I removed the piece in there, cut about 4 inches off and it fit great and doesn't appear to leak at all. Good luck! Tim

Decided to try just enough to make it around one time, figuring i could add another piece if that didn't work. The one wrap sealed well enough, at least for first trip out. Seems like i remember reading in another forum some time ago that the package contained enough of that string for 3 applications. time will tell!
