The starter/generator is not a permanent magnet AC type that could use that type of regulator.

Your DC starter motor-generator needs a regulator that senses the output voltage and then varies how much battery voltage is sent to the electromagnets in the generator. More voltage to electromagnets = stronger magnets = higher output.

Some Yamaha's like the RD350 had a similar-looking generator and similar in that it varies the output with electromagnets... the difference is that those are AC output that use diodes to convert the AC to DC... and they can't be used as a starter motor... in other words the RD350 has an alternator.

The ebay unit you pictured is for a "permanent magnet alternator" which has fixed magnets and the output is the output... no electromagnets and no variable output. That type of regulator either "bleeds off" the extra power made to keep the voltage in check or intermittently connects the output to keep the voltage in check... "bleed off" type is more common... extra power is turned into heat which is why they are finned like heat sinks.

So trying to understand what you are saying...So are you saying that this will not work as a regulator? And I need one that will be more like the traditional on/off/bypass type?

You bought an AC regulator for a permanent magnet alternator. It will not work on your electromagnet DC motor-generator.

So I have a spark , compression is sitting around 110-120psi, and I can't get it to start ... Any ideas?

Edit - could be the carb but I do have a wet spark plug and the excess fuel is dripping out from the exhaust port

I think the carb had alot of hidden reside from it being sat for a while, although I had cleaned it previously I must have missed a bit.

So I soaked the whole thing in a bit tub of oxalic acid that I made up for de rusting the fuel tank.

Going on a previous post.
Now I know that the new magnet type voltage regulators are no good I'm looking back at the original one to get going.

I'm going to need to look into replacing the capacitor's on it however after a quick inspection the capacitor's look a bit unusual. Every capacitor I have ever seen has a negative and positive side ( 2 pins) but the ones on the VR has just a single pin.

Have I got this wrong or is it not a capacitor at all?
