Getting into a... (hmmm... need to use a nice phrase for "p******g contest" here...)

Getting into a "bidding competition" early on is usually a huge mistake.

Many people will bid stupid money... way more than the item is worth... just to beat someone they've been bidding against.

Best strategy in my opinion is figuring out your absolute maximum and waiting until literally the last second to bid that amount. And when I say "absolute maximum"... that's what I mean. Even your max is two or three times or even ten times what the item is selling for just before the last second. Bid your MAXIMUM.

Ebay will bid on your behalf up to your maximum and they will not extend auctions so whoever has the highest max bid in at the last second wins. And I mean "last second" literally. Not "5 minutes". Allowing too much time gives people a chance to drive up the price you'll have to pay or even win.

Another strategy is to bid an odd number... so your absolute maximum plus a penny or two. This is because if two people bid the exactly the same amount, the earlier bid wins. That's how you'll occasionally see someone win or get ahead by a penny or two when the minimum bid increment is more.... they put that maximum bid in before you bid your amount.

Waiting until the last second can be fun... or impossible if the auction ends at an inconvenient time. Or you can miss out if you have an Internet glitch or something and your bid doesn't get in fast enough. All part of the fun.

Hint: There is software like EZ Sniper that will bid your maximum at the last second on your behalf for a small fee.

I agree with Mark I normally win or lose an item with 1 second to go, there's 2 options you win or you don't lol.
